Fedora 11 Desktop Edition

Fedora 11, the next release of the popular Linux distribution, is now available from the Fedora website. You can find full details of the major improvements and changes in this latest release in our previous post about the launch of Fedora 11, but to mention just a few, the release claims to have major speed improvements, boasting a 20 second startup, as well as overall speed improvements as ext4 is now used as the default file-system.

Another interesting feature is the ability to perform a minimal install, which amounts to about 500MB (at mount-point '/'), which should make this release more appealing to users running servers, or machines with older hardware. However, this does of course come at the cost of features.In addition, the latest versions of GNOME and KDE are included with the respective versions. The release was delayed several times due to last minute issues, however it is now officially available. You can see the screenshot tour here, showing the installation process and the desktops for both GNOME and KDE.

The release is now available through BitTorrent and direct download, however, at the time of writing, not all mirrors had Fedora 11 to download, so you may be better off using torrents if you cannot find a mirror. Custom Fedora 11 spins are also available, including the Fedora Games Spin and Fedora Xfce spin. For those wishing to upgrade, you must be using version 10 in order to upgrade to Fedora 11 through Yum. Users running Fedora 9 must upgrade to version 10 first, because of this. In case you aren't familiar with Fedora, it is a free, open-source Linux operating system, and the whole project is sponsored by Red Hat, a company providing enterprise Linux solutions.

The following are major features for Fedora 11:
*Automatic font and mime-type installation - PackageKit was introduced in Fedora 9 as a cross-distro software management application for users. The capabilities it offers thanks to integration with the desktop became more visible in Fedora 10, where it provided automatic codec installation. Now in Fedora 11, PackageKit extends this functionality with the ability to automatically install fonts where needed for viewing and editing documents. It also includes the capability to install handlers for specific content types as needed. Some work is still being completed to provide automatic installation of applications.
*Volume Control - Currently, people using Fedora have to go through many levels of mixers in different applications to properly set up sound sources. These are all exposed in the volume control on the desktop, making for a very confusing user experience. PulseAudio allows us to unify the volume controls in one interface that makes setting up sound easier and more pain-free.
*Intel, ATI and Nvidia kernel modsetting - Fedora 10 provided the first steps by a major distribution into using the kernel modesetting (KMS) feature to speed up graphical boot. We indicated at the time that we would be adding greater support for additional video cards as time went on. KMS originally was featured only on some ATI cards. In Fedora 11, this work is extended to include many more video cards, including Intel and Nvidia, and additional ATI as well. Although not fully complete, we have increased enormously the video card coverage of the KMS feature, with more to come.
*Fingerprint - Extensive work has been done to make fingerprint readers easy to use as an authentication mechanism. Currently, using fingerprint readers is a bit of a pain, and installing/using fprint and its pam module take more time than should ever be necessary. The goal of this feature is to make it painless by providing all the required pieces in Fedora, together with nicely integrated configuration. To enable this functionality the user will register their fingerprints on the system as part of user account creation. After doing so, they will easily be able to log in and authenticate seamlessly using a simple finger swipe. This greatly simplifies one element of identity management and is a great step in the evolution of the linux desktop.
*IBus input method system - ibus has been rewritten in C and is the new default input method for Asian languages. It allows input methods to be added and removed dynamically during a desktop session. It supports Chinese (pinyin, libchewing, tables), Indic (m17n), Japanese (anthy), Korean (libhangul), and more. There are still some features missing compared to scim so testing is strongly encouraged and reports of problems and suggestions for improvements welcome.
*Presto - Normally when you update a package in Fedora, you download an entire replacement package. Most of the time (especially for the larger packages), most of the actual data in the updated package is the same as the original package, but you still end up downloading the full package. Presto allows you to download the difference (called the delta) between the package you have installed and the one you want to update to. This can reduce the download size of updates by 60% – 80%. It is not enabled by default for this release. To make use of this feature you must install the yum-presto plugin with yum install yum-presto.

Some other features in this release include:
*Ext4 filesystem - The ext3 file system has remained the mature standard in Linux for a long time. The ext4 file system is a major update that has an improved design, even better performance and reliability, support for much larger storage, and very fast file system checks and file deletions. It is now the default filesystem for new installations.
*Virt Improved Console - In Fedora 10 and earlier the virtual guest console is limited to a screen resolution of 800x600. In Fedora 11 the goal is to have the screen default to at least 1024x768 resolution out of the box. New installations of F11 provide the ability to use other interface devices in the virtual guest, such as a USB tablet, which the guest will automatically detect and configure. Among the results is a mouse pointer that tracks the local client pointer one-for-one, and providing expanded capabilities.
*MinGW (Windows cross compiler) - Fedora 11 provides MinGW, a development environment for Fedora users who wish to cross-compile their programs to run on Windows without having to use Windows. In the past developers have had to port and compile all of the libraries and tools they have needed, and this huge effort has happened independently many times over. MinGW eliminates duplication of work for application developers by providing a range of libraries and development tools already ported to the cross-compiler environment. Developers don't have to recompile the application stack themselves, but can concentrate just on the changes needed to their own application.

I have used the Web to do extensive research on how to videos and the best ones I have found are from companies who you never would have thought would have provided this stuff. Microsoft has some great Free video trainings for all of their Visual products like VB, VC, and Visual Studio.

I just visited the Wordpress site, very little help, no instructions for installing optional pluggins or themes, no video how to's used Drupal and Joomla and they are so much more than just a blog plus they had a lot of great help both in documentation plus a forum where you can talk to other users.

The advantage for people who install Wordpress is the fact that every time you make a post Wordpress automatically pings a bunch of sites. Other blogs all have an add on module that will do this pinging but for some reason every marketer says that Wordpress does it better. Plus Wordpress has fields for tags, keywords and trackback's that are all with the basic features.

Wordpress or somebody who knows Wordpress needs to come out with a video that teaches you everything in one day. The could then call it Wordpress in one day video instructions. The best video tutorials I have seen on Wordpress do not come from these Internet Marketers. I should say not from the over hyped marketers. If somebody is selling something regardless of whether or not they make a living online they are still a marketer of some sort.

Most of the information I have obtained from these marketers who make their living online are always missing something. I think they do this on purpose though. Some web hosting companies offer some basic video tutorials which you get free as a hosting customer. If you really want to find some good videos that will give you everything you want to know in a day of less then I suggest you do a search for "Wordpress in a day". Or "Wordpress in one day".

Wordpress can create a nice blog site for you but you just have to learn it first. Look at the theme I now have on my site. This was a free Wordpress theme that I got directly from the Wordpress site. Installing it took a little bit of trial and error though since I could not find any instructions on how to do so.

3 more ways to increase speed of browsing with FireFox

This is a follow up to my previous article, 5 ways to increase speed of browsing with FireFox. FireFox as we all know is one of the most used internet browsers. You and I also use it as well. The software is great for systems with RAM higher than 512MB, but when the RAM comes down the browser slows down. Following are some tips to speed up your bowsing experience.

HACK 1 - Reduce the amount of RAM Firefox uses for it’s cache feature!
Here’s how to fix it:
1. Type “about:config” (no quotes) in the adress bar in the browser.
2. Find “browser.sessionhistory.max_total_viewer”
2. Set it’s value to “0“;(Zero)

HACK 2 - Increase the Speed in Which Firefox loads pages!
1. Type “about:config” into the address bar and hit Enter.
(Normally the browser will make one request to a web page at a time. When you enable pipelining it will make several at once, which really speeds up page loading.)
2. Alter the entries as follows:
Set “network.http.pipelining” to “true”
Set “network.http.proxy.pipelining” to “true”
Set “network.http.pipelining.maxrequests” to some number like 10.
This means it will make 10 requests at once.
3. Lastly, right-click anywhere and select New-> Integer. Name it “nglayout.initialpaint.delay” and set its value to “0“;.(Zero)
This value is the amount of time the browser waits before it acts on information it receives. If you’re using a broadband connection you’ll load pages faster now.

Optionally (for even faster web browsing) here are some more options for your about:config (you might have to create some of these entries by Right Click –> New– > Interger or String
network.dns.disableIPv6: set “false”
“content.notify.backoffcount”: set “5“; (Five)
“plugin.expose_full_path”: set “true”.
“ui.submenuDelay”: set “0"; (zero)

HACK 3 - Reduce RAM usage to 10mb when Firefox is minimized!
This little hack will drop Firefox’s RAM usage down to 10 Mb when minimized:
1. Open Firefox and go to the Address Bar. Type in about:config and then press Enter.
2. Right Click in the page and select New -> Boolean.
3. In the box that pops up enter “config.trim_on_minimize”. Press Enter.
4. Now select True and then press Enter.
5. Restart Firefox.

Change Drive Letters in My Cmputer

You may all have seen the drive letters in the My Computer Window. Most probably C, D, E etc. But how would you like to change it and make it something like, X, Y and Z?

Well, to change Drive Letters:
Go to Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management, Disk Management, then right-click the partition whose name you want to change (click in the white area just below the word "Volume") and select "change drive letter and paths."
From here you can add, remove or change drive letters and paths to the partition.

Google toolbar autoupdate-Oh the irritation!

Google toolbar, the toolbar from google, like most other Google products has this feature of auto-updating. The irritation when after it updates and show pop-ups like that of Auto-fill when FireFox starts up, especially on my 256MB RAM is disgusting. There isn't still a solution for this. Even if you end the GoogleUpdate.exe from the Windows task manager it will again start on its own in a couple of seconds. And like always Google has a reply for this as well:

The toolbar team went into a non-stop quest to find and fix any security issues. So we want users to be informed that the toolbar auto-updates, but I think that in general it can be a very useful feature to auto-update.

bateman_ap, I think that the toolbar team took care not to enable any extra options (e.g. pop-up blocking) if the toolbar upgrades--let me know if you find otherwise, and I'll pass the feedback on. The upgrade does have a lot of useful features that I think people would like (it took me about 10 minutes to really want the new version instead of the old version), and I'm not aware of any features that went away, so I hope people will explore the new version for a little while before assuming that the upgrade is for the worse somehow.

However enabling the auto-update has its own share of good. It makes your software and ultimately your PC safe from the latest security threats. So what do you think of it?

5 ways to increase speed of browsing with FireFox

FireFox is browser which has the 2^nd largest share in the browser market. Many people use it daily to surf the net. Even I use it too. But one thing that I don't like about FireFox is that it uses too much system resource than my 256MB RAM can hold. Following are the ways in which you can increase the speed of your browsing as well as your productivity.

1. Block the ads
   Advertisements that load in websites take way too much RAM and make the loading of the site low as well. Use Stylish or Greasemonkey to block ads off.

2. Dont load images
   Agreed that images are the very pieces that make up a website. But on a slow connection images take a long time to load. It also takes RAM to show up the image. In FireFox go to Tools => Options => Content and uncheck Load images automatically. The site may look a little distorted but it saves time and bandwidth.
3. Dont load up add-ons
   One of the very features that FireFox became so popular is that it has the ability of adding plug-ins to it called Add-ons. But the more add-ons that you add to your browser, the more RAM it will need to load them all. This will increase the start-up time of your browser.
4. Dont open and keep too much of Tabs or more than 2-3 windows
   FireFox as it is, is a RAM-hogger (no-offence!). Opening two or more windows will not only cause everything to slow down, it can also cause your browser to hang.
5. Dont maximise FireFox
   Okay this is for people like me who have 256MB RAM or less. When FireFox is maximized it uses more RAM than it uses when it is not.
